Welcome
Banks
have been operating in Scotland since the late 1690's. In the
300 years since, many banks have started and most, even where
they failed, have been absorbed by other banks. We are now In
the 21st Century and there are just three main banks left that
are still currently issuing banknotes in Scotland.
Scotland boasts one of the longest traditions of issuing
paper currency. All Scottish notes are redeemable irrespective
of age. Even if a bank no longer trades today its responsibility
for honouring notes has been assumed by the bank which
subsequently acquired it.
Because of the rarity and price of older notes, most of the notes
in my collection are from 1960 onwards. Apart from being a good
investment for the future it also server as a good insight into
the history of banking in Scotland.
To me, owning a bank note collection is like having an art
gallery in a book, some of these notes are pieces of art work in
there own right. If you are interested in collecting Banknotes then
please have a look at the Collecting Bank Notes page for
some useful information.
Collecting Banknotes is not
everyone's cup of tea but I fear the future of paper money and
coins will be superseded by the use of plastic credit cards and
that one day people will appreciate this archive of Scottish
Banknotes.
If you collect paper money from any
country and would like to have a link from this site, then
please let me know and I will be delighted to include it
in the links page.
